A compact plan with existing world-class venues

Doha 2016’s highly compact venue plan uses more than 70% existing venues organised in three major clusters and five smaller clusters.

The Olympic Village, centrally located among the venue clusters, will provide housing for every athlete in every sport.

The Main Media Centre (MMC), including the IBC, MPC, and the immediately adjacent Media Village (“Media City”), is also centrally located among the venue clusters.

  • Doha Olympic Park at the Aspire complex will host nine sports and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
  • The Qatar Club will host five sports.
  • The Al-Gharaffa Club will host six sports.
  • Other clusters include the Al-Rayyan Club Cluster (3 sports), Lusail Cluster (3 sports), Doha International Exhibition Centre Cluster (4 sports), West Bay Lagoon Cluster and Al-Corniche Cluster (road events).

From the Olympic Village, 92% of all athletes for all sports will be within a radius of 10 kilometres of their venues.

Fulfilling Qatar’s Vision for the Future

The Doha 2016 concept aligns perfectly with the Qatar Olympic Committee’s (QOC) Master Plan for Venue Development, which describes the long-term need to build a range of facilities for the development of sport and the benefit of society. This plan includes four new facilities that will serve as Olympic Venues.

The QOC’s stated mission is “to become a leading nation at bringing the world together through sport,” and the Doha 2016 concept supports this mission. All new permanent venues in the Doha 2016 concept support and benefit the long-term plan. Where permanent venues are not needed, Doha 2016 will use temporary venues for the Games.

New competition and non-competition facilities also align with Doha’s long-term development strategies as expressed in the Qatar Master Plan to 2025, the mission of which is: “To implement a physical development plan that promotes the vision for Qatar as the academic centre, sports centre, and major tourist centre of the Middle East.”

The Qatar Master Plan also proposes to develop high-quality housing and mixed-use infrastructure along major mass transit corridors. The Doha 2016 plan serves each of the plan’s goals, particularly through the development of the Olympic Village, the Media Village and new sports facilities. The “Media City” complex also supports Qatar University’s expansion plans.

The Doha 2016 concept places the venues on primary transportation corridors served by major highways and immediately adjacent to planned routes of the Doha Metro. The transport requirements for the Games match precisely with the ongoing programme to improve the road network and develop mass transit.
