Legacy

A celebration of change, an enduring dream

Doha’s vision for 2016 is distinctive: if given the honour of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the first time in an Arab land, Doha will embody the best traditions of Arab hospitality and encourage greater international awareness and understanding across the region and the world.

The Olympic Ideals facilitate change: changes in attitudes, changes in perceptions and changes in people’s lives. The 2016 Games in Doha will serve as an inspirational model for change and social progress.

As the first Olympic Games in an Arabic-speaking land, Doha 2016 will celebrate the Olympic spirit in an original way. The blending of Arabic culture with the Olympic dream will offer the world a new example of Olympism’s power to bring together different cultures and peoples in the spirit of fraternity and fair play.

Sharing excellent Games with a new world

Doha 2016 is motivated by a passion to contribute to the Olympic Movement in three ways: Doha’s facilities and infrastructure will be the most modern and state-of-the-art, ensuring technically excellent Games; Doha’s culture of distinctive Arab hospitality will provide the athletes and the Olympic Family with a memorable experience; and Doha will bring the Olympic Spirit directly to millions of Arabic-speaking people for the first time.

Doha has already staged world-class sporting competitions in venues designed for the best athletes in the world. The Aspire Dome and the Khalifa Stadium were recognised as two of the best sporting venues in the world by the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) sponsored by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Fostering achievement and hope

Doha 2016 envisions a threefold impact of the Olympic spirit: furthering Qatar’s economic and social development efforts; focusing on Qatar as a model of progress in the region; and promoting the true, hospitable Arab culture.

The visionary Amir, His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, has made Qatar a model of economic progress for the purpose of social development. His vision commits world-class resources focused on education, sport, medicine, science and technology. Doha 2016 will serve as a model for modernization throughout the region.

Fostering global understanding

To promote social progress throughout the region, Doha 2016 is committed to creating programmes that foster mutual respect and gender equality, as well as support for Paralympic athletes.

Doha 2016 is committed to establishing a range of unprecedented programmes that will serve economically disadvantaged youth around the world. These programmes will be implemented during the Candidature Phase and continued regardless of the outcome of the 2016 Host City selection.

Extraordinary legacies

The Doha 2016 Games plan is perfectly aligned with the goals of the existing Master Plan for Qatar 2025, which focuses on promoting “the vision for Qatar as the academic centre, sports centre, and major tourist centre of the Middle East”.

Doha 2016 will provide a lasting legacy for youth throughout the Arabic-speaking world by offering young men and women the opportunity to participate in sport, experience the Olympic Ideals, and learn about other cultures. Doha 2016 programmes will inspire Arab youth to pursue and extend friendships around the world while offering youth from other cultures a true portrayal of Arab culture.
