Building the Vision

In 2006, Qatar's GDP per capita was just over US$62,900, the highest in the world. The country's recent economic boom has, however, created new challenges, especially in the transport and infrastructure sectors. The government has therefore launched major new infrastructure overhauls to the road network, the airport and the port.
Having played host to the Asian Games in 2006, Qatar already has significant sports infrastructure in place. Many of these facilities will, however, be upgraded to meet Olympic capacity requirements.
Qatar's tourism industry, nonexistent 10 years ago, is now starting to get serious about promoting the country as a luxury travel destination.
The Qatar Tourism Authority is aiming to attract 1.5m people per year by 2010 and the tourism industry has already started preparing for this number of visitors. Hotel capacity nationwide is planned to triple by 2010 and many other new developments will also support visitors.
Government and official bodies aside, the private sector is also building like mad, with a number of major projects due for completion in the near future. More than 800 new towers are scheduled to rise in Doha over the next 10 years, making the city one of the busiest construction areas in the world.
