Sport in Qatar
Our vision for the Doha 2016 Olympic Games will be focused on our future, the world's youth, particularly those disadvantaged either economically or through disability. It will engage and inspire them so that Arab youth better understand the wider world and the youth of the rest of the world gain a true picture of life across the Arabic-speaking world.
Awarding Doha the 2016 Games would unleash the power of the Olympic Movement and sport to create understanding, hope and change that could unite the entire region with the rest of the world.
The Olympic Movement in Qatar
It was in 1984, in Los Angeles, that Qatari athletes participated in the Olympic Games for the very first time, taking part in the soccer events, athletics and shooting.
At the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, Qatar won its first Olympic medal through Mohamed Ahmed Sulaiman, who won bronze in the 1500m.
At the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, Qatar was represented in four sports: athletics, shooting, table tennis and weightlifting. Again, Qatar won a bronze medal thanks to the weightlifter Saïd S. Asaad, in the over 105kg category.
The Heir Apparent of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani who is also President of the Qatar National Olympic Committee, was elected as Qatar’s member of the International Olympic Committee in Salt Lake City in 2002.
The Asian Games 2006
Doha hosted the Asian Games 2006, putting on what has been called the best, the biggest, the most widely reported, and the highest standard Asian Games ever. Partly as a result of this success, Qatar has been selected to host the 2011 Asia Football Cup.
In addition Qatar regularly hosts major international sporting events such as the Qatar Tennis Open, Qatar Masters golf tournament, Table Tennis World Championship, the Qatar IAAF World Super Tour (Athletics), Moto Grand Prix and the Tour of Qatar (cycling).
Sports Education
ASPIRE is the sports academy of Qatar. This visionary project was launched in 2004 with the objective of discovering new sports talents in the region and helping them become world class athletes.
With the very best facilities and sports programmes, the Academy offers young athletes a chance to take part in competitions at an international level.
Sports federations
The first structured sport in Qatar was introduced by employees of oil companies. These expatriates, mostly Asians and Europeans, practiced sports such as soccer, cricket, tennis and golf. Soon their Qatari coworkers joined them and created their own national teams, clubs and federations.
