Doha 2006, the 15th Asian Games, was an unprecedented sporting success for the city, the country and the Middle East region.
Over the course of the 13 days of high class sporting activity, Doha 2006 generated fevered excitement amongst athletes, fans and the residents.
Doha 2006 was the biggest Asian Games ever, with more than 10,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions, competing in 39 sports.
The size and scale of the event was a logistical challenge that Qatar had not encountered before. However, with a dedicated and passionate organising committee, and with the support of the whole country behind them, Doha 2006 proved to the world that Qatar could stage a major international sporting event.
The 15th Asian Games was more than just a two week sporting event. Doha 2006 set out a vision for the future of Qatar – that this small country could become a symbol of hope and pride for everyone in the Middle East. Never before had the region held such an event and the success of Doha 2006 will no doubt spur on other Middle East countries to achieve similar feats.
Qatar's success on the sports field was matched by the organising committee's organisational and technical excellence. With a budget of US$2,8 billion, Doha has been transformed into a world class sporting destination boasting impressive facilities. Doha 2006 has left a positive sporting legacy which will be enjoyed by many generations to come.
Spectators and athletes alike marvelled at the Aspire Academy of Sports Excellence. As part of the Sport City complex on the outskirts of Doha, the Aspire played host to some of the most memorable moments of the Asian Games, including both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
Additionally, its visionary sports academy aims to identify the best young sporting talent from the region and help them to maximise their potential.
The Sports City also consists of the magnificent Khalifa Stadium. Following extensive redevelopment the stadium's capacity increased from 20,000 to 50,000.
Doha 2006 revealed to the world that Qatar can deliver a first rate international sporting event. The 2006 Asian Games were a milestone for the country and the wider region - breaking records and setting new standards.
