Disabled Sport

The Qatari National Committee for People with Special Needs was established in 1998 by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Bin Abdullah Al Missned, the consort of the Amir of Qatar.

Sports programmes and special facilities for people with disabilities are developing fast in Qatar. Teams of sportsmen and sportswomen from Qatar now compete in both the Paralympic Games and in the Special Olympics.

Special Olympics Qatar was established in 1994, with its headquarters at the Club for Disabled Sports. It now numbers almost 1,000 athletes and 40 coaches. Its athletes are involved in a variety of sports and activities, including athletics, floor hockey, basketball, football, aquatics, bocce, softball, gymnastics, speed skating, table tennis and powerlifting.

Special Olympics International recently recognized His Highness Heir Apparent Sheikh Tameem Bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar National Olympic Committee (QNOC), for his care and support for people with special needs in Qatar. QNOC's youth activities include programmes for young people with special needs.

Qatari athletes have competed in every Special Olympics since the 1995 World Summer Games in the USA. Fifteen Qatari athletes competed at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Dublin, Ireland, and 24 athletes participated in the 2006 Fifth Regional Games in Dubai.

At the 9th FESPIC Games in Kuala Lumpur in 2006, Qatari athletes won three medals. Nasser Saed won a gold medal in javelin, Abdulla Mohd a bronze in discus and Dabyas Khalifah a bronze in shot put.

Irrespective of the Bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016, Qatar is pressing ahead with its plans to build a state-of-the-art Paralympic Stadium next to the Shafallah Centre for Children with Special Needs in Doha. It is scheduled to be completed in 2009.
